What the Christmas Holiday Season Is All About

When the Christmas holiday season comes each year, many families and/or friends gather together and watch Christmas movies. Many of the classic Christmas movies, such as White Christmas, portray idyllic holiday scenes. However, in an age motivated by economics, the Christmas holiday season is becoming more and more commercialized, and that idyllic feeling is in danger of being lost. Have you ever noticed that Christmas sales start beginning right after Halloween? You no more than put away your Halloween decorations, and you can see mall stores decorated in full Christmas regalia. You cannot help but wonder why Thanksgiving is pretty much overlooked. To put it in perspective, it is like decorating for Valentine’s Day right after New Year’s.

Although it is understandable that stores offer early Christmas sales for those people who want to get an early start on Christmas shopping, do stores really have to start decorating for Christmas as soon as November comes around? Stores should at least wait until Thanksgiving is over before they get out the Christmas decorations. Many children enjoy the decorations at anytime during the Christmas holiday season.

The Christmas Holiday Season is all About Gift-Giving

Many people think that the Christmas holiday is a time to give and receive expensive gifts. Well, that was not the original purpose of Christmas, and it should not be now. Because the media has equated endless purchasing with the Christmas season, people voraciously scour shelves for gifts. It is really unfortunate that many people think that the more expensive looking the Christmas gift, the better off they will be in the eyes of the person they are giving the gift to. Or, some people will go so far as to purchase gifts at random, merely because they were on sale.

The Christmas Holiday Season has Become a Competition

Just like stores lavishly decorate for Christmas, so do people in residential neighborhoods. In fact, many people try to outdo each other by seeing who can put up the best Christmas display. There have even been Christmas movies made about these kinds of competitions. So, as time goes by, Christmas is becoming more about receiving than giving. Christmas should be as simple as giving the gift of love to one another, as well as sharing quality time with family and friends. So, stop stressing about getting just the right gift, and simply be kind, because that kind of gift is priceless.
